Fold fabric in half in any direction you want. The fold
will dictate which way the design will face.

Draw the design so the middle line will be the center of
the design. For educational purposes, we used a heart.

The fold of the fabric will be the line going through the
middle of the design.

Sew the design using a simple running stitch. The needle
will have to go in and out, in a straight line leaving the ends hanging.
This is very important to the next step.

The design should roughly look like this when the
stitching is complete. The ends are both hanging.

To begin "scrunching" the design in preparation for
dyeing, hold one end of the thread while pushing the fabric along the thread
line. Be sure to secure the other end so the fabric does not slip off the
thread.

Once you scrunch the fabric, it should look like this with
both the ends of the thread hanging away from the fabric.

Tie the ends of the thread together so the fabric is held
very tightly. Be sure not to pull too hard on the ends of the thread,
or the thread will break, and you will have to repeat the process again.
